Full-time PhD Studentship in End-User Authoring Tools for Virtual Reality

at Marco Gilardi in Paisley

The Creative Technology Group, at the Department of Engineering and Computing, University of the West of Scotland, UK, is looking for strong and motivated candidates to fill an open PhD position.
This is a fully-funded 3-year PhD studentship which includes fees (current value £4200) and a stipend of £14,553 each year to support living costs.

This project "LIEVRES: Learning Immersive Experience - VR EditorSystem" involves the research, design and development of a generic interactive end-user authoring tool system for VR experiences aimed to education and research experiments. The overall project involves the research and development of new algorithms, and the development of novel software tools, including an Application Programming Interface (API), a scripting language and a Graphical User Interface (GUI). The exact scope of the project will be defined taking into account a particular PhD student's interests and skills.

The output of the research in the form of the innovative authoring system will empower end-users (teachers and researchers) to create ad-hoc virtual reality experiences and open up new application areas that are impossible to achieve using existing development pipeline of VR experiences.

Candidates must demonstrate outstanding academic potential with preferably a 1st class honours degree and/or a Master’s degree with distinction or equivalent Grade Point Average. An IELTs (Academic) score of 6.5 minimum (with a minimum 5.5 in each component) is essential for candidates for whom English is not their first language.
